Fourth Posting

Well to say the least the field trip last week was anything but extrodinary. I have never been so bored in my life. I would have rather of been in class than that. But at least it is over with and I won't have to go back there again! But on the other hand I did learn some things that were very interesting and upsetting. I went on this field trip for my Social Work class which is about services for older americans. At this field trip I learned about certain programs (or the lack there of) for older americans that help them out when they need it. Some of these programs included meals on wheels, medical serivces, and senior care services. The information I was presented with was infuriating. There are not enough programs to help the elderly and some of the ones that are available do not have restrictions on them. So it would allow a senior citizen with an income of lets say a million dollars be eligble for free food! In my opinion I think it is crazy because there are some elderly who do not even have running water and they need that program more than the others. After taking this class I am thinking of changing my concentration from substance abuse to gerentology. I wouldn't mind doing something like lobbying for the elderly people. But who knows I may not like the other classes.

This is Benji my puppy. It is kind of a bad picture, I took it on my phone, but anyways I know someone said they wanted to see a picture of him, so here he is! haha

  2. Ok 1st and most important I am so jealous of your puppy. I freaking LOVE IT!! I'm thinking it's a yorkie at least that's what it looks like and I have been wanting a yorkie for ummmmm like my whole life. On to another subject: that is a little disturbing about the programs set up for the elderly it definitely makes you think. Hopefully no matter what direction you travel in you will be able to make a difference.

  3. I think that gerontology is a great field. They predict that it will be one of the fastest growing fields very soon because of the aging baby boomer population. That coupled with your passion for senior citizen rights would make it a great field to go into. Good luck with that! I also think that your dog is adorable. I have a Shih-Tzu and a Chihuahua myself and I love them dearly. I don't know what I would do without my babies!

  4. Your trip sounds depressing! It is so sad to hear of those who are less fortunate. Things that we take for granted are so precious to them. I wish you luck in your major change if you decide to do it. Also, your puppy is ADORABLE! I have always wanted a tiny dog!

  5. Wow Catherine! I can see how that would be frustrating. I use to work in a nursing home, and I also did home health for awhile, and it seems like the older generation just gets pushed aside and forgotten about. Its almost like people think because they are old they don't need respect anymore, but how can that be true. This generation is probably the highest generation that demands respect. Look what they've seen and done. But I think that would be great to be able to help out in any way possible. Go for it!!

  6. I actually considered studying gerentology myself my freshman year. I love working with the elderly. I like feeling helpful and being able to make someone's day better. I also feel like there is so much to learn from a person who has been living that long. I agree that there are not enough programs to help with them. Your puppy is very cute! :)
